Haymarket, Market City

Market City is located along Hay Street, in the inner city suburb of Haymarket. This complex contains a produce and flea market known as Paddy's Markets on the ground floor, the Market City shopping centre on three levels above, and a skyscraper apartment building called The Peak. The Vegetable Market building was built in 1909 in the Edwardian style with the façade was preserved and restored in the 1980 redevelopment. A tram has stopped at the Paddy's Markets Light Rail Stop, which is on the Central to Dulwich Hill line of the Sydney Light Rail Network.

Haymarket, Station House

 
'Station House' is a heritage listed commercial building located on the corner of George Street and Rawson Place, in the inner city suburb of Haymarket. It was designed by Ernest Lindsay Thompson and built in 1915 in the Federation Free Classical in style with Chicaoesque design elements. It was an investment property for Reuben Gardiner, a boot and shoe manufacturer who traded under the name of 'Joe Gardiner'. The building was occupied by the Station House Cafe and mixed commercial tenancies, including the Master Butchers Association, the Hellenic Philodramatic Society, the National Irish Association and Alfred Croaker and Daughters World's Lolly instructors who were chocolate and lolly makers. It is now home to a backpackers hotel and on the ground floor a travel agency and a takeaway kebab shop.

Haymarket, Christ Church St Laurence


Christ Church St Laurence is an Anglican church located along George Street, in the inner city suburb of Haymarket. This heritage listed church was built in 1845 and designed by Henry Robertson and Edmund Blacket in the Old Colonial Gothick Picturesque and Victorian Free Gothic styles.

This mural is on a retaining wall at the entrance to Southgate Shopping Centre, in the southern suburb of Sylvania. It depicts the houses, cafes and wharves around the Georges River in this suburb.

Dolls Point, wharf

 
This wharf is at Lady Robinsons Beach on the shore of Botany Bay in the southern suburb of Dolls Point. The shifting sands have silted around most of the wharf. A man is sunbaking at the far end.

Pitt Street, Sugar House

 
This heritage listed building was built on the site of Sydney's first sugar exchange, on the corner of Pitt Street and King Street. It was built in 1879 in the Victorian Italianate style as a hotel for Sydney businessman, William Mears. It was first managed by Edward Trickett, a world champion sculler, and known as "Trickett's Hotel", later renamed "Kings Hotel". It was adapted to commercial use after its closure and renamed "Sugar House" with various tenants. It was restored and redeveloped in 2023 to become a Ralph Lauren boutique over four floors and a private rooftop.

Hyde Park, Busby’s Bore Fountain

The Busby’s Bore Fountain is located in northwest corner of Hyde Park North. It was designed by John Byrom and installed in 1962 to commemorate the Busby Bore, a tunnel built to bring water from the Lachlan Swamp (now Busby's Pond in Centennial Park) to Hyde Park. John Busby, a mineral surveyor and civil engineer identified the Lachlan Swamp as a potential source of water for the city after completing a survey of existing and potential sources of water in 1825.

Cahill Expressway, Sydney Harbour

Looking across the Cahill Expressway above Circular Quay Railway Station to Sydney Harbour. A cruise ship is moored at the Overseas Passenger Terminal and another is almost passing under the Sydney Harbour Bridge. A number of ferries are arriving and departing from the Circular Quay Ferry Wharves. This view is from the balcony at Cafe Sydney, which is a rooftop restaurant in Customs House at Circular Quay.

The Rocks, George Street


A view of George Street at the Rocks looking north towards the Sydney Harbour Bridge. This was before street dining was introduced in front of the historic shopfronts, hotels and restaurants opposite the police station and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Haymarket, McKell Building

 
The McKell Building is bounded by George Street, Rawson Place, Pitt Street and Barlow Street, in the inner city suburb of Haymarket. This 23-level tower was built as a state government office building in 1979 in the Brutalist style. It was named after Sir William John McKell, GCMG, QC who was the 12th Governor-General of Australia from 1947 to 1953 and had previously been Premier of New South Wales from 1941 to 1947.

Country Road is a clothing retailer which was established in 1974. It is located in the Queen Victoria Building, a shopping centre bounded by George, Market, York and Druitt Streets. The entrance to the shop is on the first floor at the northern end of the arcade.

The Cornerstone Grace Church is a Presbyterian Church located along Woniora Road, in the southern suburb of Hurstville. At a time when a lot of old church buildings are being abandoned or repurposed, this is a newly built one.

South Hurstville, mural


This mural is located along King Georges Road, in the southern suburb of South Hurstville. It was created in 2022 by artist David Cragg in collaboration with Woniora Road School students and is inspired by local fauna. It includes a kookaburra, a superb fairy wren and two tawny frogmouths on branches. It replaces the Community Wall mural which was here.

The Rocks, First Impressions, The Convict

"First Impressions" is a sculpture located in Playfair Street in The Rocks. This sandstone relief was created by Bud Dumas in 1979 as a memorial to the convicts, soldiers and settlers who made up the original settlement at The Rocks. This side of the sculpture features "The Convict". The First Fleet arrived in 1788 with 780 convicts, along with soldiers and settlers. This monument also features "The Settlers" and "The Soldier".

Queen Victoria Building, Victoria Cross war memorial

This wooden honour board set in a glass case within a larger wooden cabinet is located in the Queen Victoria Building. This war memorial lists the names of Australians awarded the Victoria Cross. The cabinet also includes a painting by G. W. Thomas, on loan by permission of Queen Elizabeth II, of Queen Victoria presenting the first Victoria Crosses in London's Hyde Park on 26th June 1857. The model is of a Russian 64pdr cannon, which was captured at Sebastopol in 1854, This was crafted by apprentices from HMA Naval Dockyard, Garden Island, Sydney. It was unveiled on 31 October 1986.

Redfern, theatre


This former theatre and night club is a heritage listed building which is bounded by Cleveland Street, Walker Street and James Street, in the inner city suburb of Redfern. It was built in 1890 as the Palace Skating Rink. By 1905 it was occupied by Petchell F and Co boot manufacturers. From 1914 it was the Eclipse Printing Company. By 1930 it had become the Empire Picture Theatre and by 1961 was a nightclub known as The Stage Club. It has now been converted to commercial office space. The James Street facade retains its Federation Free Style Classical style but the Cleveland Street facade seen here was modified into a stylised, post-modern interpretation of Art Deco style.

Redfern, warehouses

The former Demco Machinery Co Ltd Factory is located along Cleveland Street, in the inner city suburb of Redfern. The 1889 building on the left was designed by R. Kunstman, in the Victorian architectural style. The 1938 extension on the right was designed by J Aubrey Kerr in the Inter-war functionalist architectural style. The buildings were redeveloped and now used for office, retail space and a restaurant and bar in the basement.

Redfern, The Surrey Hotel

 
The Surrey Hotel is located on the corner of Cleveland Street and Elizabeth Street, in the inner city suburb of Redfern. The heritage listed pub was built in the 1880s in the Victorian Italianate style and formerly known as The Surrey Club Hotel.

Chippendale, heliostat (Theme Day: Reflections in Windows)

One Central Park consists of two residential towers above a retail complex along Broadway designed by architect Jean Nouvel with artist and botanist Patrick Blanc, in the inner city suburb of Chippendale. The taller tower features a hovering cantilever heliostat with an assembly of motorised mirrors that capture sunlight and direct the rays down onto Central Park's gardens. At night, an LED art installation by conceptual artist Yann Kersalé creates a shimmering display in the sky. Central Park is an urban redevelopment of the former Kent Street Brewery.

Darlinghurst, sign

 
A number of heritage listed buildings along Oxford Street, in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst, are currently being redeveloped. The hoardings around these buildings have been decorated with rainbow colours and murals which tell the history of the LGBTIQA+ community in this area. This sign features Flags of Importance including the Rainbow flag, the Australian Aboriginal flag and Torres Strait Islander flag.

Myer, Mardi Gras Festival

 
The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival is running from 16 February to Sunday 3 March 2024. To celebrate, these rainbow flag displays have been installed on the ground floor of the flagship Myer department store.

Chippendale, Central Park, Halo


 "Halo" is a wind activated kinetic sculpture in the middle of Chippendale Green, along O'Connor Street, in the inner city suburb of Chippendale. The giant yellow ring measuring 12 metres in diameter is attached to a 6 metre long silver arm, which pivots off-centre atop a 13 metre high tilted silver pole. It was 
created in 2012 by Jennifer Turpin and Michaelie Crawford.
